According to the Endesa Foundation, Smart Cities are those in which information and communication technologies (ICT) are applied with the aim of providing them with infrastructures that guarantee:

  • Sustainable development.
  • An increase in the quality of life of citizens.
  • Greater efficiency of available resources.
  • Active citizen participation.

In Spain a “National Plan for Smart Cities” was implemented back in 2014 and it ends this December 2023. These initiatives are carried out through, which promotes initiatives such as Smart Cities and Territories” which, among many other things, has created agreements such as the one with the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP).

Another interesting study is the Cities in Motion” study conducted by the IESE Business School University of Navarra.

Its main objective is to assist in the transition and public implementation of ICT information and communication technologies that help transform cities.

-One of the examples that the European School of Management and Business EUDE points out to us is the measurement of environmental parameters:
The monitoring and tracking of environmental parameters allows us to measure, for example, air quality, humidity, temperature or pollen concentration.
In this area we can highlight the Live Singapore project, which allows citizens to access a wide range of data on the city, mostly provided by the citizens themselves.

Building automation and control. This is another parameter to be taken into account. For example, the European SMARTeeSTORY project will propose integrated building automation and control systems to monitor and optimize the energy performance of buildings (HVAC, Dynamic Façade, lighting and intelligent vehicles), integrated into the Smart Readiness Indicator (SRI).


Safe City: According to this article in Smart Building magazine, the main technological elements that make a city safe are command and control centers, video surveillance, data processing and storage systems, reliable network infrastructure and integrated communications.

Smart Traffic: According to Symmetry Electronics, one of the cornerstones of smart city design is to have an integrated intelligent transportation solution. It can be argued that a city is not fully smart without an intelligent traffic management system. Intelligent transportation systems (ITS), or intelligent traffic management systems, provide an organized and integrated approach to minimize congestion and enhance safety on city streets through connected technology.
